Elf on the Shelf Gingerbread House Ideas | A Sweeter Family Night

An elf and a Christmas house are an easy pairing. The elf brings the surprise, the house brings the activity, and the family gets a reason to gather around the table.

If traditional gingerbread houses have become more frustrating than festive, there is another way to create the same Christmas-house magic.

Let the elf deliver the baking night

Set the elf beside your baking supplies with a short note: “Tonight we build a Christmas house.” Then change one word in the plan. Instead of building it, bake it.

The Tomte Cake Set uses a reusable cake-house pan, so the house shape comes out of the oven ready to decorate. No balancing walls. No waiting for icing to act like glue.

Make the elf part of the story

After reading the Tomte Cake story, the elf can “introduce” Tomte to the family. The next step is the hidden surprise: Tomte goes inside one of the cakes before baking, and the family later discovers who finds him.

The whole tradition follows five easy steps: Read. Bake. Hide. Decorate. Find.

Try an elf decorating challenge

Leave a note with a theme such as snowiest house, brightest house, funniest house, or most candy on one roof. Older kids can judge, younger kids can simply decorate, and nobody needs a perfect result.

Turn it into a two-night setup

Night one: the elf delivers the Tomte Cake Set. Night two: the elf leaves decorating supplies and a clue about Tomte. This gives you two mornings of elf fun from one family activity.
