A decorated Christmas cake can be the centerpiece of a family gathering, but getting it from one house to another requires a little planning.
Start with a stable base
Move the cake onto the board, tray, or serving surface you plan to transport before adding the most delicate decorations. A firm base reduces handling later.
Choose travel-friendly decorations
Very tall candy pieces, loose toppers, and heavy decorations can shift in the car. If something looks fragile, consider transporting it separately and adding it after arrival.
Give the cake enough clearance
A box or carrier should be tall and wide enough that decorations do not touch the sides or lid. Crowding a decorated cake can cause more damage than the drive itself.
Keep the ride level
A flat vehicle floor is generally more stable than a sloped seat. Keep the cake away from loose bags and other items that could slide into it during a turn or stop.
Decorate partly before, partly after
For a family activity like The Tomte Cake, you do not necessarily need to transport a fully finished cake. Bring the baked cakes and decorating supplies to the gathering, then let everyone decorate together when you arrive.
Sometimes the easiest way to protect a decorated cake is to make the final decorating part of the destination.
